The former is classified as a toy dog whilst the latter is classified as a fighting dog. The Maltese that is a native of Italy is white in color whilst the Shar Pei comes in black, brown and red colors.
The Maltese has a silky coat while the Shar Pei has a fine coat.
The Maltese has a social disposition and an alert temperament whilst the Chinese Shar Pei is deemed to be loyal as well as independent.
Both dog breeds are considered to be good with/ safe for children.
The Maltese has a minimum lifespan of some 12 years and a maximum lifespan of some 12 years and a maximum lifespan of some 14 years. The Shar Pei on the other hand has a minimum life span of some 7 years and a maximum life span of some 10 years.
