The Basset Hound originated in France and is a heavy, long and shallow dog, easily spotted by its loose hanging ears. Earlier it was used as a hunting dog but now it is used as a companion dog. They are mostly black, red or white in color with a hard and shiny coat. The smooth coat has a moderate to high risk of shedding. Due to the elastic skin, they have skin folds on their body. Thus, it needs to be kept clean and dry to prevent irritation. Their short legs and a heavy body poses serious health issues, so they should never be overfed, as this breed cannot afford to put extra weight on the legs and spine, in which case it could lead to lameness or paralysis. Normally, Basset Hounds are calm and inactive dogs and they have a Life Expectancy of 10-12 years. Though the dogs’ reflexes are slow, it has an excellent sense of smell. This breed of dogs needs daily basic care, trainings and exercises to keep them healthy. Being friendly and amiable, this breed is suitable for all kinds of households.
