The Whippet was developed in 19th century from Greyhound, the Italian Greyhound, and also an another terrier. Its name is derived from the expression whip it meaning to move quickly. Whippet is an English Greyhound in miniature form. It is known for its characteristic speed in running. The dog is capable of speed up to 37 miles per hour (60km. per hour). A medium-sized sight hound depicting elegance and fitness, the Whippet denotes great speed, power and balance. Being a versatile breed, they appear in a wide variety of colors and markings. Whippets make excellent pets and love to be in the company of humans. They are intelligent, affectionate, and docile animals. Whippets should never be trained in a harsh manner, they are extremely sensitive both mentally and physically. They should be engrossed in games and running. This breed is quite cold sensitive. Hence, they should be kept clad in woolens in winters. The Whippet should be given proper nutrition, vaccinations, and regular veterinary visits. They suffer from stomach upset and skin allergies among the few health problems. They live for about 12-15 years. Whippets are quite talented as hunters, watchdogs, and racers.
